TIVO CO-FOUNDERS LAUNCH A NEW STREAMING DEVICE: Michael Ramsay and Jim Barton, the co-founders of TiVo, are launching QPlay, a video streaming device. At launch, QPlay will support YouTube, Vimeo, and Vine. Support for Netflix and Hulu Plus is also in the works. Similar to Google’s Chromecast, the QPlay is controlled by an accompanying app. However, all content providers can be accessed from the QPlay app, instead of requiring the user to switch between multiple standalone applications, as users must do with the Chromecast. The QPlay also presents users with curated channels that surface content from multiple services. The device will sell for $49. (Gigaom)
TWITCH IS COMING TO XBOX: Twitch is coming to Microsoft’s Xbox One game console. The service allows users to watch live and recorded video game-play. Despite being somewhat unknown, Twitch accounts for 1.8% of peak Internet traffic, topping Hulu, Facebook, and Amazon, according to data collected by DeepField. 1 million users broadcast video game footage through Twitch monthly, according to the company. DISNEY LAUNCHES A VIDEO APP: Disney is launching Disney Movies Anywhere, a video app for iOS. The new app provides users with a dedicated storefront to download Disney content from iTunes. Users can also use the app to redeem digital download codes from Disney DVDs and Blu-Rays. (TechCrunch)
COMSCORE’S JANUARY VIDEO RANKINGS: ComScore has released its January Video Rankings. SpotXchange was the top video ad property during the month by number of ads served. Google, including YouTube, was the top video content provider during the month, with 157.6 million unique viewers. Facebook ranked second, with 85 million unique viewers. (comScore)
BEBO TO LAUNCH VIDEO MESSAGING SERVICE: Bebo, a social network that was recently repurchased by its founder from AOL, is launching a video messaging service called Blab. The new video messaging service will function like Snapchat, allowing users to send a video message that is automatically deleted after it is viewed by its recipient. (The Next Web)
