Amazing infographic shows the moments in which 177 of the world's most creative minds peaked

Are you past your creative prime? Visual journalist Oliver Uberti plotted the lives of 177 artists, composers, poets, scientists, and software developers from the year 1300 to today and discovered you very well might be.

Uberti chose a signature work for each and used black dots to represent when the work was completed. "When choosing between, say three operas by one composer, I went with the one that blew my hair back," he said. The line colors correspond to the industry each creative is in, and the line length is their age.

Uberti found that 60% of these masterpieces were created by people in their 30s and 40s. Marie Curie discovered radioactivity at 31, Michelangelo finished the ceiling of the Sistine Chapel at 37, and Gustav Mahler completed his epic Fifth Symphony at 42.

You can read more on Uberti's process here, which he describes as experiential, not scientific.

With the rate of the current tech boom, we should expect to see these creations at even younger ages. Mark Zuckerberg, Steve Jobs, and David Karp all created their most famous accomplishments to date in their 20s.

Uberti discussed this topic further for a TEDx Talk he gave in April 2013.

Katy Perry kicked off the Super Bowl halftime show in high fashion. The 30-year-old pop star rode in on a giant tiger singing her song, "Roar."

The show only got bigger, and sometimes stranger, from there.

Perry performed six of her songs, accompanied by Lenny Kravitz and a surprise appearance by Missy Elliot, who may have stolen the halftime show.

From interestingly costumed backup dancers and singing and dancing beach balls and sharks, Perry's first halftime show was a big success.

Perry rode out on a giant robotic tiger to her hit single "Roar."

China manufacturing shrank again in January, HSBC data shows

Workers assemble automobiles on the assembly line at a factory in Shenyang, north-east China's Liaoning province, on January 9, 2015

Beijing (AFP) - Chinese factory activity contracted in January for a second straight month, a closely watched private survey showed on Monday, a day after the government announced the first official decline in the sector in more than two years.

British banking giant HSBC said a preliminary reading of its purchasing managers' index (PMI) showed it had edged up to a final reading of 49.7 last month, from 49.6 in December.

But the result still showed shrinkage in the manufacturing sector of the world's second-largest economy, a key driver of global growth. PMI readings above 50 point to growth.

The result was also slightly worse than the preliminary reading for the month of 49.8, HSBC said.

The index, compiled by information services provider Markit, tracks activity in China's factories and workshops and is a closely watched indicator of the health of the Asian economic giant.

The figure came an official Chinese survey on Sunday showed manufacturing activity contracting for the first time in more than two years.

China's official PMI for January, released by the National Bureau of Statistics, came in at 49.8 last month, down from 50.1 in December.

It was the first official contraction reading for 27 months.

"We think demand in the manufacturing sector remains weak and more aggressive monetary and fiscal easing measures will be needed to prevent another sharp slowdown in growth," Qu Hongbin, HSBC chief economist for China, said in the release announcing the bank's figure.

The manufacturing weakness comes after China's economy expanded 7.4 percent in 2014, slower than the 7.7 percent in 2013 and the worst result since the 3.8 percent recorded in 1990.

China's economy has been beset by problems including soft manufacturing, weak exports and falling property prices, though the government has been satisfied so far that the slowdown is under control as employment has remained resilient.

Nevertheless, authorities have taken some steps to try and put a floor under growth, carrying out limited stimulus measures last year and even cutting benchmark interest rates in November for the first time in more than two years.

Seattle Seahawks throw an interception from the half-yard line with 25 seconds left, lose the Super Bowl

seahawks patriots interception

Inches away from the endzone, the Seattle Seahawks threw an interception from the half-yard line with 25 seconds left to lose the Super Bowl to the New England Patriots 28-24.

It's one of the craziest endings in Super Bowl history.

Russell Wilson tried to throw a slant to Ricardo Lockette, but it was picked off by Malcolm Butler.

The NFL world is baffled by the play call. The Seahawks were the best running team in the NFL during the season. But with the game on the line from a foot away, they tried to put the ball in the air.

The play:

After blowing a 10-point fourth quarter lead, it looked like Seattle was about to score a touchdown a win the game. Two plays earlier, Wilson got into the red zone with a miracle bobbled catch by Jermaine Kearse.

"We went to three receivers, they sent in their goal line people," Pete Carroll said after the game. "We just didn't want to run against their goal line people there."

Here's full video of Carroll talking about the play against the game:

Richard Sherman's reaction to the interception said it all:

Butler is a rookie cornerback who went undrafted in 2014 after attending West Alabama. He has been one of the team's pleasant surprises this year, and he ended up making the play of his life.

Patriots win.

Here's the unbelievable catch that almost won the Seahawks the Super Bowl

Super Bowl Catch

In what will go down as one of the best finishes in Super Bowl history, the New England Patriots beat the Seattle Seahawks. But it almost turned out differently thanks to a miracle catch.

With the Seahawks trailing by four in the final two minutes, Russell Wilson threw deep to Jermaine Kearse. The play initially appeared to be an incomplete pass.

SUPER BOWL PLAY

But on the replay, it was clear that the ball never hit the ground and it basically landed in Kearse's lap for the completion.

SUPER BOWL PLAY

But what is really amazing is that Kearse probably could have scored on the play as he was not touched.

But by the time Kearse realize he wasn't down, the Patriots defenders were able to shove him out of bounds. The Seahawks failed to score and the Patriots are Super Bowl champs.

Ex-IMF chief Strauss-Kahn goes on trial for 'pimping'

Former IMF chief Dominique Strauss-Kahn leaves after a hearing before an investigation committee at the French Senate on June 26, 2013 in Paris

Lille (France) (AFP) - The sexual proclivities of ex-IMF chief Dominique Strauss-Kahn come under the spotlight again Monday when he goes on trial in France for "pimping" four years after a sex scandal cost him a shot at the presidency.

The disgraced 65-year-old economist finds himself back in the dock -- this time in the northern French city of Lille -- accused of being part of a prostitution ring used by his entourage to organise sex parties for him in Brussels, Paris and Washington.

Lurid details of group sex and high-end prostitution are likely to emerge in the three-week trial during which Strauss-Kahn will take the stand alongside a colourful cast of characters including luxury hotel managers, police, freemasons and a brothel owner nicknamed "Dodo the Pimp."

The trial will be the latest in a series of legal woes that have allowed judges and journalists to peek behind the bedroom door of a man once tipped as a potential challenger to former French president Nicolas Sarkozy.

The former head of the International Monetary Fund, known in France as DSK, saw his career implode in 2011 when he was paraded handcuffed in front of the world's cameras after a New York hotel maid accused him of sexual assault.

While those criminal charges were dropped and the case settled in a civil suit, further humiliation ensued as a litany of sordid tales -- from affairs to further charges of violence against women -- emerged.

Then, six months after the scandal in New York, his name cropped up in an investigation into a prostitution ring in northern France and Belgium known as the "Carlton Affair" after one of the swish hotels in Lille where local businessmen and police officials would organise sex parties.

- Self-confessed 'libertine' -

The run-of-the-mill probe into a vice ring revealed some of the prostitutes involved had been paid to participate in orgies attended by Strauss-Kahn, who was charged with "aggravated pimping in an organised group".

The silver-haired former finance minister admits to being a "libertine" who enjoys orgies but has steadfastly denied being aware the women attending the parties were paid.

This is the crux of the case the state will have to prove: whether he knew the women lavishing their attention on him were prostitutes and whether he played a role in organising their presence

In France, while prostitution is legal, "proxenitisme", or procuring, is not.

So-called pimping has a much wider scope in the eyes of the law than its usual definition as an agent for prostitutes, and includes profiting from and aiding and abetting prostitution.

But even prosecutors have been divided over whether there is enough evidence for DSK to face trial and a possible 10 year jail term. In 2013 state prosecutor Frederic Fevre called for the charges to be dropped, but investigating judges overruled him and ordered DSK to stand trial.

- Former presidential hopeful -

Their probe found that DSK was the "king of the party," and they are seeking to prove his mere presence gave rise to prostitution as his entourage organised the evenings according to his schedule.

Those attending the gatherings described "carnage with a heap of mattresses on the floor", with DSK the focus of several women at a time in an atmosphere more of "pure sexual consummation" than a typical swinger's party.

Before the trial proper begins, the court will on Monday deal with a host of procedural applications, such as one for the trial to take place behind closed doors from one of the prostitutes testifying.

The first to take the stand among the 14 accused on Tuesday will be the Carlton's former public relations manager Rene Kojfer who is accused of organising prostitutes for "well-connected men", often setting them up in his hotel.

He is also accused of doing publicity for another accused, a pimp who owns a string of brothels near the French border in Belgium, where rules are more lax.

Dominique Alderweireld, nicknamed "Dodo la Saumure" -- which loosely translates as Dodo the Mackerel, the French slang for pimp -- is accused of procuring prostitutes for Kojfer, some of whom were employed at the orgies attended by DSK.

Strauss-Kahn will be in court for the start of the trial and will be cross-examined from February 10.

The 5 best Super Bowl ads of 2015

$

0

During the Super Bowl, companies fight to be noticed during the most-watched American broadcast.

Here are the best ads.

Some were touching, while others were hilarious.

5. Loctite's dancing people in fanny packs put the brand on the map.

The glue company was relatively obscure — until now. Thanks to the unforgettable ad, a lot of people are now talking about the brand.

4. Snickers hilariously spoofed The Brady Bunch.

The ad is a Brady Bunch spoof with action star Danny Trejo as Marcia and Boardwalk Empire actor Steve Buscemi as Jan. It got a lot of laughs on social media.

3. BMW's ad used history in a compelling way.

BMW's Super Bowl spot harks back to a now-infamous 1994 clip with Katie Couric and Bryant Gumbel. “What is ‘internet’ anyway,” Gumbel said, “Do you write to it like mail?”

The “Newfangled Idea” ad then fast-forwards to 2015 when the presenters struggle to grasp the concept of BMW’s electric i3 vehicle.

2. Chevy's Colorado ad actually convinced us our TVs went out.

The ad panned out on University of Phoenix stadium, before convincingly cutting out. This ad definitely got our attention.

1. Budweiser's "Lost Puppy" ad pulled heartstrings.

For its ad, Budweiser brought back its puppy and Clydesdale horses. The puppy finds himself lost before being heroically saved by Clydesdale horses.  This ad really resonated with people and was by far the most popular.

Super bowl nationwide ad

Companies pour millions of dollars into Super Bowl ads every year.

But sometimes the commercials can do more harm than good.

Here are the five worst ads from this year's event.

5. Victoria's Secret's ad lacked innovation.

This was the first time since 2008 that Victoria's Secret has aired an ad during the Super Bowl.

We were expecting something more innovative than this montage of angels in lingerie, which is pretty similar to many other ads we've seen from Victoria's Secret.

4. GoDaddy's commercial fell flat.

The company had to air a replacement ad after its original commercial ignited a backlash. Animal rights activists complained that the original ad could encourage people to buy pets irresponsibly

Just days before the Super Bowl, GoDaddy had to create a new ad from file footage, according to AdAge. It's narrated by the agency's art director, who had apparently never done any voiceover work before.

3. Budweiser's ad attacking craft beer offended hundreds of beer drinkers.

The ad shows a mustachioed hipster with text saying Budweiser isn't brewed to be "fussed over" or "dissected."

"Let them have their peach pumpkin ale," the ad says of craft beer drinkers.

Budweiser has been losing market share to craft beer.

2. Kim Kardashian's starring role in T-Mobile's Super Bowl ad was cringeworthy.

Addressing unused mobile data in the ad, Kardashian flatly says, "Each month, millions of gigs of unused data are taken back by companies. Tragic."

She says she's concerned that people are missing out on mobile data that could be used to see her makeup, tennis backhand, outfits, vacations, and once more, outfits.

1. Nationwide's ad about accidents that kill children was the most depressing ad of the Super Bowl.

It was also the most talked about.

The spot features a young boy saying he'll never learn to fly, travel with his best friend, or get married because he died in an accident.

Then the camera cuts to a bathtub overflowing with water and open kitchen cabinets with spilled chemicals.

Critics called it morbid and disturbing.

Richard Sherman's reputation as America's greatest trash talker began when he taunted Tom Brady off the field at the end of a game in 2012.

That was a long time ago.

On the last play of New England's 28-24 win in Super Bowl 49, Sherman shook Brady's hand as he took a knee to run out the clock.

Photographer Mark J. Rebilas got a great photo of the moment. Mutual respect here:

Katy Perry dazzles at Super Bowl halftime show

Singer Katy Perry performs during the Super Bowl XLIX halftime on February 1, 2015 at the University of Phoenix Stadium in Glendale, Arizona

Glendale (United States) (AFP) - Singer Katy Perry dazzled at Sunday's Super Bowl halftime show in a spectacular performance featuring dancing sharks, a prowling metallic lion and a levitating star that shot fireworks into the night sky.

Perry stalked into the University of Phoenix Stadium field in Glendale, Arizona riding the huge, fiery-eyed lion as she sang her megahit "Roar" while wearing a flame-festooned dress.

The 30-year-old star performed a brief duet with rock legend Lenny Kravitz, and the pair sung "I Kissed A Girl," one of Perry's first big hits in 2008, during a brief but raunchy performance.

The crowd cheered during the next segment that saw Perry perform on a desert island set -- complete with palm trees, dancers dressed up to look like goofy sharks and beach balls, as the star sang "California Gurls."

The Super Bowl's halftime show has become a must-see event in the middle of the NFL's championship extravaganza.

Halftime performances generate massive ratings and, sometimes, unexpected controversy such as when Janet Jackson inadvertently suffered a "wardrobe malfunction" that saw much of her breast exposed in 2004, or Prince's 2007 show that featured a strangely shaped guitar that cast a phallus-shaped shadow.

Perry's 12.5-minute performance did not generate any such controversy and the reaction on social media appeared overwhelmingly positive, with many users praising her live singing, her dancers and her three quick costume changes.

Actress Anna Kendrick hailed the pop star's performance, sending her compliments via Twitter.

"It's official. Katy Perry is magic," she wrote.

"All jokes aside, @katyperry your voice tonight was actually unreal."

Rapper Snoop Dogg chimed in too, tweeting: "If you were wondering that was me in tha Shark costume!!"

Missy Elliott was the star guest of the performance, making a foggy entrance to sing hits including "Get Ur Freak On" and "Work It." The newly-svelte rap diva's high-energy number "Lose Control" was a crowd pleaser.

Perry's grand finale was a spectacular rendition of her huge hit "Firework."

She climbed onto a star-shaped platform and elevated above the football field, cruising around the stadium as fireworks burst around her, to enthusiastic cheers and applause from the crowd.

The New England Patriots defeated Seattle 28-24 at this year's Super Bowl 49, denying the Seahawks a second consecutive title in the NFL championship spectacular.

The Super Bowl was expected to draw a whopping 15 million viewers -- or about one third of all Americans -- many of whom look forward to the highly-anticipated half-time show and much-buzzed about commercials.

Pete Carroll explains why the Seahawks ran what is being called the worst call in Super Bowl history

$
0
0

Pete Carroll

With 25 seconds left in the Super Bowl and trailing by four points, the Seattle Seahawks had the ball on the 1-yard line and decided to throw the ball instead of giving it to Marshawn Lynch, one of the best running backs in the NFL.

The decision backfired as Russell Wilson threw an interception and is now being referred to as the worst call in Super Bowl history.

After the game, Seahawks coach Pete Carroll explained the decision and it basically comes down to the Seattle reacting to the Patriots instead of doing what they do best.

"We went to three receivers, they sent in their goal-line people," Carroll explained after the game. "We had plenty of downs and we had a timeout and really we just didn't want to run against their goal-line group."

Sure enough, a look back shows that the Patriots were anticipating the run and had eight players packing he box and crowding the line of scrimmage.

SUPER BOWL PLAY

Caroll later explained on ESPN that with just one timeout and 25 seconds left, they couldn't run the ball all three (potential) plays, and they weren't going to get a better opportunity to throw the ball than what the Pats were showing defensively on second down.

As for the play, Carroll called the interception "a miraculous play" made by Malcolm Butler. Even though many agree that it was a bad call, it still took an amazing play to turn what could have easily been a touchdown into an interception.

Butler quickly recognized the route being run by Ricardo Lockette and immediately broke to the spot where the ball was going to be thrown, reading the play long before the pass was even thrown.

SUPER BOWL PLAY

Carroll did say that he told his players "that was [his] fault totally."

And it is going to be a long time before Seahawks fans will stop wondering "what if they had just given the ball to Lynch?"

The NFL world cannot believe the Seahawks didn't run the ball from one yard away

$

marshawn lynch

The Seattle Seahawks' decision to throw a slant on 2nd and goal from the half-yard line with 25 seconds left in the Super Bowl is getting obliterated by the NFL world.

Down 28-24, Seattle could have given the ball to Marshawn Lynch and tried to gain a little more than a foot on the ground.

Since they've been the best rushing team in the NFL by a significant margin, everyone assumed that that's what they'd do.

Instead, they threw the ball and it got intercepted by the Patriots:

NBC's Chris Collinsworth was dumbfounded on the broadcast, and the criticism only grew from there.

"That was the worst call in Super Bowl history," Deion Sanders said on the NFL Network after the game.

"I don't have words for that call," former player Marshall Faulk agreed.

Other NFL players could not believe they didn't give the ball to Marshawn:

When asked by the NFL Network whether he thought they should have given it to Lynch, Tom Brady responded, "I'm glad they didn't."

The big national NFL writers are ripping Pete Carroll and the Seahawks:

So what were they thinking?

After the game Pete Carroll explained his decision. He said that he didn't have a run-friendly matchup because he had three wide receivers on the field against New England's goal-line defenders. Seattle only had one timeout, so they could have only run the ball one time no matter what.

If they ran on 2nd down and didn't make it, they would have called timeout and been forced to throw the ball on 3rd and 4th down.

Throwing it on 2nd down gave them the flexibility to run the ball on 3rd down, at least on paper.

It was a fantastic interception by Malcolm Butler, no question. But ultimately the Seahawks didn't put the ball in their best player's hands with the game on the line.

Nationwide was the most mentioned Super Bowl advertiser on social media — but not for the right reasons

Nationwide ran two ads during the Super Bowl this year, but it was one that told the story of dead children (watch it below) that really got people talking.

So much so that Nationwide has landed itself the ominous title of the most-mentioned advertiser on social media during Super Bowl XLIX, according to quickfire analysis from digital marketing technology company Amobee Brand Intelligence across Twitter, Facebook and YouTube.

The ad, which featured a boy talking about all the life achievements he missed out on because he died in an accident, was an attempt to raise awareness about the fact that preventable childhood accidents are the leading cause of childhood death.

But the insurer was slammed on social media, with viewers calling the campaign "depressing." Almost two-thirds (64%) of the mentions about Nationwide were negative in sentiment, Amobee found. Just 12% were positive and 24% were neutral.

Super Bowl Social Media Analysis

Following close after Nationwide in terms of mentions was Budweiser, but its data tells a different story. The beer brand ran three ads during the Super Bowl: "Lost Puppy" (which Business Insider declared the best Super Bowl XLIX commercial,) "Brewed the Hard Way," and "Coin" for its Bud Light brand.

Of its 234,810 mentions during the game analyzed by Amobee, 48% were positive, 40% were neutral, and 13% were negative (those numbers are rounded-up.)

Here's the Nationwide ad that got social media abuzz during the Super Bowl this year.

On game day, Nationwide later released this statement: "Preventable injuries around the home are the leading cause of childhood deaths in America. Most people don’t know that. Nationwide ran an ad during the Super Bowl that started a fierce conversation. The sole purpose of this message was to start a conversation, not sell insurance. We want to build awareness of an issue that is near and dear to all of us—the safety and well being of our children. We knew the ad would spur a variety of reactions. In fact, thousands of people visited MakeSafeHappen.com, a new website to help educate parents and caregivers with information and resources in an effort to make their homes safer and avoid a potential injury or death. Nationwide has been working with experts for more than 60 years to make homes safer. While some did not care for the ad, we hope it served to begin a dialogue to make safe happen for children everywhere."

Here's how much more contagious measles is than Ebola

Measles, a disease we thought was history, is making a worrisome comeback.

Most of the reported cases have been in California, where dense clusters of children are going without the vaccine because their parents have refused it.

These clusters are particularly dangerous because they threaten herd immunity, the scientifically-proven concept that so long as a certain percentage of people in a community are vaccinated, the majority is protected from a disease (including those who are too young or too ill to be vaccinated).

As of the late 1990s, measles was a disease that had all but disappeared in the United States. This month, thanks in part to a recent flare-up at Disneyland, the number of reported cases shot up to 102, a record for a disease that's reached 100 annual cases only a handful of times since 2001.

But measles, viral infection of the respiratory systemimmune system, and skin, spreads quickly — so fast that it's roughly 9 times more contagious than Ebola.

For every person who has measles, about 18 more will get it. Part of the reason it's so infectious is that it's airborne, meaning that unlike Ebola (which spreads only via the bodily fluids of infected people), it can be spread via a stray cough or sneeze and survive for up to two hours on surfaces and in the air.

Also unlike Ebola, someone with measles doesn't have to have symptoms to spread it. Once you get measles, you can infect others for four days before you develop any visible symptoms, such as the telltale all-over-the-body rash or a hacking cough.

Obviously, those who haven't gotten the measles vaccine are at the highest risk of infection. For those people, roughly 90% of those exposed to the virus will get sick. Conversely, people who have received both doses of the MMR vaccine have only about a 1% chance of being infected when exposed.

There's no specific treatment for measles, and while the disease typically runs its course over a two-to-three week period, it can also lead to some worrisome complications. For every 10 people who get measles, about three develop other conditions like pneumonia, ear infections, or diarrhea. More severe complications are much rarer, but the worst cases of measles can lead to encephalitis (swelling of the brain), mental delays, deafness, and even death.

Take a look at the chart below, designed by data journalist David McCandless of Information is Beautiful, to see how measles compares with Ebola in terms of how easily it spreads. The farther to the right, the more likely you are to catch the virus if you are exposed to it; the higher up on the chart, the more deadly the virus.
